Friends We Make Through Travel
Saverio Luzzi, Villa La Ripa
My husband Mark and I first met Saverio at his winery, Villa La Ripa, in 2013 in Arezzo, Italy. We immediately fell in love with the winery, the wines and especially Saverio. We have been back to Villa La Ripa twice since then and have arranged for friends and family to visit as well. The history and beauty of Villa La Ripa and our time spent with with Saverio is a treasured memory.
Saverio and his wife meticulously and accurately renovating the second century villa back to its former glory over many years. Being a neurologist by trade and still actively working as a physician, a patient who was a wine maker convinced Saverio to cultivate the old vines. Saverio learned from his patient how to cultivate the vines -the oldest vines on the land are over 80 years old. He also harvested olives from his trees to produce delicious olive oil.
Saverio's philosphy is that rows and rows of Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Canaiolo, Trebbiano and Malvasia are looked after with love and passion, both with head and heart, always in full respect of the nature, its perfect rhythms, and environmental sustainability. One of our favorites of his award winning wines is wittingly named Psycho, a blend of half Sangiovese and half Cabernet Sauvignon.
The villa is incredible with its renovated stable as a tasting room and its very own chapel pictured below. Saverio told us that when they bought the villa, the walls were all white. One day, his wife began to clean the walls dissolving the white layer and to her amazement found beautiful frescoes underneath like those in the chapel pictured below.
On our last visit, we took a group of our friends to meet Saverio for a wine tasting. It was truly a highlight of our trip! Below are a few photos of our visit and the last photo is my husband with Saverio.
Looking forward to the day when we can see our friend again and create more memories in Italy, my favorite place in the world.
